Natural Monuments

Natural Monuments

Natural monuments can be boulders, rocks, ancient trees or their groups, as well as "spectacular works of nature". The status of a natural monument can be given by the Voivod or the municipal council. There are 54 natural monuments in the Radzyń district. The majority of them (50) are monuments of animated nature, e.g. old and magnificent trees. These can mostly be seen in manor parks or forest complexes. The remaining 4 natural monuments are boulders of considerable size. An overwhelming number of these monuments can be found in the county of Komarówka Podlaska (15 monuments) and the county and town of Radzyń Podlaski (16 monuments).

Boulders with carvings:

  • In the Branicka-Suchowola forest, we can find a glacial boulder – gray granite stone with girth of about 710 cm, protected since 12/20/1986. There are mysterious markings carved on it: horseshoes (hooves) and a cross. The Wohyń County today is at the former borderline between the Crown of the Polish Kingdom and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which gives regional researchers grounds to assume this may have been a landmark. Whereas some recognize the sign of the cross as a pagan rune symbol. Of course, all these are hypotheses which require further study. There is another local legend, which associates the boulder with Leszek the Black's war campaign against the Yotvingians. It claims that in 1282, while chasing their enemy, the fellowship of Leszek the Black stopped here to regain strength before marching on, and the duke's horse, spurred to a leap left an imprint of its hooves in the stone, which is still visible today.

  • Between Wohyń and Zbulitowo, in the northern part of the "Barania Szyja" (Sheep Neck) forest complex (Suchowola Forest Division), a boulder/natural monument has been preserved. It is a glacial erratic block of red granite with a girth of about 580 cm, protected since 12/28/1995. There is a cross visible upon the rock. There used to be many more such stones in these parts, but before 1900 they were broken down and used to build a road from Wohyń to Radzyń.
